On a Personal Note:

Hi, folks - this is Camryn Collier, I am the Administrative Assistant here at the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem.

I wanted to take a moment and speak on behalf of the Board and overall organization and say that we are sending so much love up the mountains.

If you've interacted with me, you know that I am an Appalachian State University Alumni, I used to work at the Blowing Rock Art & History Museum, I have family up in Hendersonville, and friends scattered through the region in Boone, Asheville, Cullowhee, and Ashe County to name a few.

My roots in Western North Carolina run deep, and I'm sure many of you are the same. After all, Winston-Salem is the last "big" city in the Piedmont facing the Appalachian Mountains, and somehow it feels like all roads lead there and back.

Associated Artists Members Raising Money:

  • Michelle Schenker is selling her print of the Western NC mountains. Part of the proceeds will go to World Central Kitchen, who is in Asheville currently passing out food and water. Check out the print HERE.
  • Kimberly Varnadoe is also selling polaroid emulsion lifts from her Katrina Angel collection as a fundraiser. 100% of the proceeds will be donated to emergency funds. Email her HERE to see what she has left of the collection for sale.

Other Ways:

  •  Donate to the NC Emergency Art Fund HERE and/or check out the resources for artists facing disaster here

As an individual, I'm devastated for all of my friends and family who are dealing with these incredibly difficult hard times.

As a member of an organization dedicated to the arts, my devastation is especially heavy for the arts community. While Winston is considered the City of Arts and Innovation, no one will argue that a cornerstone of North Carolina's art identity was beating strong in the mountains. Incredible ceramic potters, fiber artists, painters, glassblowers, and artistic strongholds including the River Arts District in Asheville and the Penland School of Craft have all been affected.

We grieve with all of you, our friends, family, and fellow artists at this time. If you are dealing with any fallout from the flooding, please let us know if we can lend a helping hand. Also, if you are interested in helping with fundraising in some compacity, please contact us at:

camryn@associatedartists.org      or       susan@associatedartists.org

We are planning on having a meeting about how to help fellow artists in the region sometime next week. Sending much love & hope,

Camryn Collier and the Associated Artists of Winston-Salem, INC.

🍁 OCTOBER HAPPENINGS 🍁

A highly competitive juried exhibit called ARTIST SPOTLIGHT, this exhibition showcases recent bodies of art from a select number of AAWS members. Since few artists are chosen and the Art Council’s Main Gallery is highly traveled, this is a valuable and renowned opportunity. New this year, monetary awards for First, Second, and Third place will be awarded.

The deadline is October 21st.

Snow, mittens, pine trees, and hot chocolate...these are the things we love about winter. Let your imagination wander through a Winter Wonderland and onto the canvas! Paintings, photos, collages, mixed media: whatever your medium, share your images of a Winter Wonderland with AAWS in this upcoming show.

Note that this a great opportunity to promote winter-themed art for Holiday Decorations and Gifts!

The deadline is Halloween.

Enter Your Work!

The Benton Convention Center, the Associated Artists Gallery in Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts, and the Community Exhibitions will change out one more time before End of Year - keep an eye out for those announcements as well.

"My influences harken back to my childhood in rural British Columbia, Canada. My father is a biologist and a passionate environmentalist. He taught my sister and I to love the earth and to take care of it. We grew up in the country, rescuing toads and salamanders and caring for wounded wildlife if we happened upon it. We tended our flower, fruit and vegetable gardens. We often went camping. It was an idyllic childhood. Additionally, both of my parents are artistic, detail-oriented, and hard-working. They were the original DIYers. My Dad designed and helped build our house. My Mom would knit, crochet and sew our clothes. They taught me to notice details, to strive for excellence, and to feel completely comfortable creating things."
